      He was born at Christiania, Norway. He was educated in th
      e university at Christiania, and subsequently studied at He
      idelberg, working in Bunsen's laboratory. In 1858 he becam
      e professor of geology in the university of his native city
      , and he wawas afterwards placed in charge of the geologica
      l survey of the country, then established mainly through hi
      s influence. His contributions to the geology of Norway wer
      e numerous and important, especially in reference to the so
      uthern portion of the country, and to the structure and rel
      ations of the Archaean and Palaeozoic rocks, and the glacia
      l phenomena. His principal. results were embodied in his wo
      rk Udsigt over det sydlige Norges Geologi (1879). He was au
      thor also of some poetical works. He died at Christiania o
      n the 25th of October 1888.
      The "Kjerulf-Glacier" was named after him on the island of "South Georgia," 54 degrees South of the Equator, 37 degrees West of Greenwich, England, in the Antartic. He was commemorated on a postage stamp in Norway in 1974 as an outstanding Norwegian Geologist.
